Alo, the Los Angeles-based activewear brand, sold more than $1.5 million worth of products within one minute of its presale launch on Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace on August 12. This debut set a sales record for a newly launched brand in Tmall’s sports and outdoor category, despite China’s broader consumer slowdown. The company announced plans on September 16 to open eight new stores across seven Greater China cities by 2027.
The rapid sales surge came shortly after Alo announced its entry into the Chinese market on social media less than two months prior. The presale began at 12:30 a.m., drawing heavy demand fueled by accumulated preorders, a limited-edition tote bag, and celebrity endorsements. Dao Insights noted that these factors concentrated sales in the initial rush, raising questions about the sustainability of demand. Alo’s planned physical expansion includes two stores in Shanghai and one each in Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou.
China’s retail sales growth slowed to 0.4% year over year in August, half the expected pace, amid weak consumption and a prolonged property downturn that dragged second-quarter GDP growth to 4.3%, the slowest in over three years. Alo’s strong debut contrasts with this trend, highlighting the potential for foreign lifestyle brands to capture niche demand in China’s sports and outdoor market. The brand’s approach leverages social media buzz and limited-edition products to drive early sales momentum.
Alo’s sales performance and expansion plans come as the company aims to deepen its footprint in Greater China’s activewear sector. The eight new stores scheduled through 2027 will be located in key cities including Shanghai and Beijing. Alibaba provided the sales data, confirming the $1.5 million figure from the presale event on Tmall.
