Extend engineer Bo Lau has developed a website that simulates sitting at Elizabeth Holmes’ desk during the height of Theranos in 2016, using over a thousand emails, slides, texts, and documents from the United States v. Elizabeth Holmes trial, according to techcrunch.com. The site recreates the environment with period-accurate devices like an iPhone with a home button and a MacBook Air running OS X El Capitan.
The interactive website allows users to explore documents made public from the court case on Holmes’ iPhone and laptop screens. Visitors can even operate the Theranos Edison machine virtually, the device designed to extract extensive health data from a single drop of blood. Lau created the project to make navigating the vast trove of court documents easier than searching through thousands of PDFs on court websites.
This detailed digital reconstruction offers a unique way to engage with one of the most notorious tech trials in recent history. It coincides with a watch party hosted by Lau’s company, Extend, for Nathan Fielder’s documentary about Holmes titled “You Can See Everything.” The project also serves to promote Extend itself, though specifics about the company’s offerings remain limited in the report.
The website’s launch comes ahead of Fielder’s documentary release, aiming to provide a more accessible and immersive experience of the Theranos saga. The project highlights the extensive public record from the trial, which has been made available through the American legal system’s discovery process.
