A study analyzing over 120 million car trips in the United States found that speeding saves drivers an average of just 54 seconds per trip. The research, published in the journal Communications Sustainability, highlights that while more than 43% of trips involved speeding, the time saved is minimal compared to the extra fuel costs and emissions generated. The study was released on July 16 and focused on trips on roads with speed limits of 45 mph and higher.
Researchers from the University of Minnesota examined driving data from four Wednesdays in 2021, combining national road network information, speed limits, and elevation data. They discovered that drivers spent nearly 12% of their driving time exceeding speed limits. The study estimated that if drivers adhered to posted speed limits, the U.S. could save approximately $22 million in fuel costs daily and reduce fuel consumption by 6.7 million gallons, significantly cutting emissions.
The findings underscore the inefficiency of speeding in terms of time saved versus fuel wasted and environmental impact. With gas prices remaining high, the study suggests that following speed limits could provide economic relief to drivers and reduce planet-warming emissions.
