Zcash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, briefly surged past $1,600 on Wednesday, marking a new 10-year high amid a broader crypto market rally. The token has gained 88% over the past month, with a 28% increase in the past week alone, according to CoinGecko data. This rally coincided with Bitcoin's brief rise above $87,000, levels not seen since January, boosting the entire market.
David Lawant, head of research at Anchorage Digital, noted that Zcash climbed from outside the top 80 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization to the top 10 in 2026. The token's rise is attributed to growing interest from users prioritizing financial privacy. Unlike Bitcoin, Zcash uses zero-knowledge cryptography to conceal transaction details such as sender, recipient, and amount, offering enhanced privacy features.
Zcash’s appeal lies in combining Bitcoin’s fixed supply with stronger privacy protections, which has attracted attention amid increasing concerns about government surveillance. Supporters argue that the expansion of artificial intelligence technologies could heighten surveillance risks, making private digital payments more desirable. Other cryptocurrencies like Solana, XRP, and Hyperliquid have also seen gains recently, but none matched Zcash’s performance this week.
Zcash’s market cap rise to the top 10 cryptocurrencies in 2026 underscores its growing prominence, with the token’s price movement closely tracked by investors amid ongoing debates about privacy and regulation in digital assets.
