Australia’s official music charts will exclude wholly AI-generated recordings starting August 31, while allowing AI-assisted music that remains substantially human-made, according to medianama.com. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) updated its Charts Code of Practice to implement this change, which will be reflected in the chart published on August 28.
The updated ARIA rules distinguish between AI-generated recordings, where generative AI creates the entirety or primary portion of the creative elements, and AI-assisted recordings, which are substantially human-made. ARIA’s new policy requires that AI use must not raise concerns about stream or chart manipulation. These rules follow industry labelling definitions established in July and align with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI) new global principles announced in July for AI-developed recordings.
This move by Australia highlights a growing need for music industries worldwide, including India, to consider how AI-generated content should be treated in official charts. The IFPI framework also mandates compliance with copyright, related-rights, and personality-rights laws, as well as transparent signalling of AI use to listeners. India’s music industry faces a similar question about whether to distinguish between human-made and AI-generated music in its industry-recognised charts.
ARIA’s updated Charts Code of Practice will take effect with the chart dated August 31, published on August 28, marking a clear regulatory approach to AI-generated music in official rankings.
