KKR-backed Hero Future Energies (HFE) plans to invest ₹4,000 crore in green hydrogen projects over the next few years, founder and chairman Rahul Munjal said. The company aims to capitalize on rising demand from sectors like steel, cement, and refining, which face pressure to reduce emissions. HFE is currently evaluating a 50 MW electrolyser and 250 MW hybrid renewable energy capacity as part of this initiative, according to livemint.com.
The investment is part of HFE's broader strategy to expand its clean energy portfolio through fiscal year 2030. The company is focusing on hybrid, storage-backed, and round-the-clock renewable power projects alongside solar and wind. Munjal highlighted that green hydrogen is an emerging growth area, with plans to explore multi-megawatt projects for industrial applications and downstream derivatives such as green ammonia. Specific project details will be announced as they mature.
This move aligns with the growing emphasis on green hydrogen as a mainstream energy commodity in India, especially for hard-to-abate sectors. HFE's experience includes ongoing projects like the facility at Rockman Industries in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The company expects green hydrogen technologies and economics to mature within about four years, positioning it to benefit from the energy transition and decarbonization efforts in heavy industries.
HFE's planned ₹4,000 crore investment includes evaluating 50 MW electrolyser capacity and 250 MW of hybrid renewable energy, signaling a significant commitment to green hydrogen development in India, according to livemint.com.
