India added 6.2 million telephone connections in July 2026, raising the total subscriber base to 1.354 billion, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Wireless connections increased by 6.02 million to 1.306 billion, while wireline connections rose by 0.19 million to 48.01 million. The overall tele-density climbed to 94.68% from 94.31%.
Bharti Airtel led mobile subscriber additions in July with 2.69 million new users, followed by Reliance Jio with 2.45 million. Vodafone Idea and BSNL added approximately 240,000 and 169,000 subscribers respectively, while MTNL lost around 5,700 subscribers. Airtel ended the month with 489.49 million mobile subscribers, slightly behind Jio’s 506.03 million, with Vodafone Idea and BSNL holding 199.06 million and 93.18 million respectively.
The wireless mobile subscriber base, including machine-to-machine (M2M) connections, grew by 5.54 million to reach 1.288 billion. Excluding M2M, consumer mobile SIMs stood at 1.150 billion. Private operators accounted for 92.75% of the mobile market share, while BSNL and MTNL together held 7.25%. Additionally, 5G fixed wireless access subscriptions crossed 13.2 million, with rural users slightly outnumbering urban users. Mobile number portability requests totaled nearly 16 million in the month.
The data reflects ongoing growth in India’s telecom sector, with the total subscriber base now at 1.354 billion as of July 2026, according to the TRAI report released this week.
