India's internet subscriptions reached 1.11 billion at the end of June 2026, marking an increase of 21.35 million from March, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. Urban areas accounted for 666.07 million subscriptions, while rural areas had 448.08 million. Uttar Pradesh led with 155.39 million subscriptions, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The growth in subscriptions during the quarter was driven by 14.15 million new connections in urban areas and 7.20 million in rural regions. Delhi recorded the highest internet subscriptions per 100 people at 176.43, followed by Goa, Ladakh, and Chandigarh. In contrast, Bihar had the lowest penetration at 50.93 subscriptions per 100 people, despite ranking sixth in total subscriptions with 67.67 million.
These figures reflect the number of internet connections rather than individual users, highlighting the widespread adoption of multiple devices or connections per person. The data underscores the digital divide between states with high penetration rates like Delhi and those with lower rates such as Bihar and Jharkhand. Uttar Pradesh, while having the highest total subscriptions, had a penetration rate of only 63.82 per 100 people.
The TRAI report for April-June 2026 provides a detailed snapshot of India's internet landscape, showing continued growth in both urban and rural areas. The next quarterly update is expected to offer further insights into regional trends and the impact of ongoing digital initiatives.
