Jio plans September 2027 test launch for 1,600-satellite LEO network

Reliance Jio aims to test launch satellites for its proposed 1,600-satellite low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation in September 2027, according to inc42.com.

Reliance Jio aims to test launch satellites for its proposed 1,600-satellite low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation in September 2027, according to inc42.com. The test will involve deploying a few satellites to evaluate hardware and software before mass deployment begins in early 2028. Jio plans to deploy 400-450 satellites by 2030 and complete the constellation by 2035.

The test launch will assess the network’s technologies, with around 90-100 minimum coverage satellites expected to be sent within two to three quarters after the test launch. This phased deployment means India could start receiving satellite broadband connectivity in 2028. Jio has filed an application with the International Telecommunication Union for orbital resources needed for the network. The company is also building ground stations in India to support partner networks and its future satellites.

This initiative follows Jio’s announcement two months ago about building a sovereign LEO satellite constellation as part of its satellite connectivity expansion. Jio Platforms’ managing director Akash Ambani mentioned the possibility of collaborating with global constellation operators while developing its own satellite capabilities. The move positions Jio in the growing satellite broadband market, which aims to enhance connectivity in India, especially in underserved areas.

Jio’s plan to begin test launches in September 2027 sets a clear timeline for its satellite broadband ambitions. The company expects to start providing satellite connectivity to India by 2028 with the initial batch of coverage satellites, marking a significant step in expanding the country’s digital infrastructure.
