Sandeep Kumar, CEO of L&T Semiconductor Technologies (LTSCT), said at the Semicon India 2026 event that India requires hundreds of semiconductor companies to build a globally competitive chip ecosystem. He emphasized that moving beyond fabs to develop capabilities across the entire semiconductor value chain is essential for India’s growth in this sector, according to inc42.com.
Kumar explained that the global semiconductor market’s breadth makes it difficult for a single company to address all needs. He highlighted the importance of multiple Indian chip companies emerging rather than monopolization by a few. India has developed strengths in digital and compute technologies, analogue and mixed-signal design, and radio frequency technologies but still faces gaps in system architecture, high-power semiconductors, memory, optics, and manufacturing, inc42.com reported.
The CEO pointed out that system architecture, which involves understanding customer requirements and designing products accordingly, is a larger gap than chip architecture. This is partly because Indian engineers have had less direct exposure to global end customers historically. During the conference, L&T Semicon unveiled 40 semiconductor products, including its first silicon carbide (SiC) product platform and a fully designed-in-India BLDC motor controller, inc42.com detailed.
L&T’s 1,200V SiC MOSFET platform targets applications such as electric vehicle fast chargers, microgrids, solid-state transformers, and traction inverters. The company’s product launch at Semicon India 2026 marks a concrete step in addressing India’s semiconductor ecosystem gaps, as reported by inc42.com.
