PNB targets ₹6,000 crore quarterly profit after strong Q2 showing

Punjab National Bank (PNB) aims to achieve a quarterly net profit of ₹6,000 crore in the coming quarters, following its highest-ever quarterly profit of ₹5,532 crore in Q2 FY27.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) aims to achieve a quarterly net profit of ₹6,000 crore in the coming quarters, following its highest-ever quarterly profit of ₹5,532 crore in Q2 FY27. The state-owned lender reported a 13% year-on-year increase in net profit for the quarter ended September 2026, driven by improved core income and a reduction in bad loans, Managing Director and CEO Ashok Chandra said.

PNB maintained consistent growth in operating profit despite treasury losses of about ₹1,000 crore during the quarter. Treasury income declined to ₹753 crore from ₹1,769 crore in the same period last year. However, the bank's core operating profit, which excludes treasury gains and recoveries, grew approximately 29% year-on-year in Q2, following growth of 32-34% in the previous quarter, Chandra told PTI.

The bank’s focus on strengthening its core business and improving operating profit supports its bottom-line growth. PNB’s performance contrasts with some peers facing challenges from treasury income volatility. The lender’s ability to sustain profit momentum amid treasury setbacks highlights resilience, positioning it well within the competitive Indian banking sector where asset quality and income diversification remain key.

Ashok Chandra emphasized that PNB is targeting further growth in operating profit to support its net profit goals. The bank’s consistent quarterly performance over the past year underscores its strategic emphasis on core income, which will be critical as it aims to cross the ₹6,000 crore net profit milestone in upcoming quarters, according to the interview with livemint.com.
