Tata Power shares fall after floating solar partnership with Ocean Sun

Shares of Tata Power dropped to a fresh 52-week low of ₹338.40 on Thursday following the company’s announcement of a floating solar partnership with Norwegian firm Ocean Sun on October 7.

Shares of Tata Power dropped to a fresh 52-week low of ₹338.40 on Thursday following the company’s announcement of a floating solar partnership with Norwegian firm Ocean Sun on October 7. The stock was trading at ₹339.15 by mid-morning, down 1.74% from the previous close of ₹345.15, with sell orders exceeding buys on a volume of over 9.83 lakh shares worth approximately ₹46.71 crore, according to thehindubusinessline.com.

Tata Power revealed the collaboration to pilot a roughly 300 kWp membrane-based floating solar system at its Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra. Unlike traditional pontoon-based floating solar, Ocean Sun’s technology uses a hydro-elastic membrane, which could reduce installation complexity and costs. SBI Securities described the partnership as positive for the medium to long term, highlighting its focus on evaluating new-generation floating solar technology under Indian conditions, thehindubusinessline.com reported.

The stock’s decline contrasts with its 52-week high of ₹464.90 reached in April 2026 and reflects a year-to-date drop of over 11%. Tata Power’s underperformance relative to the Nifty Next 50 index, where it is a constituent, underscores investor caution despite the potential of the new solar technology. Floating solar is gaining attention as a renewable energy solution in India, with this pilot representing a step toward more cost-effective installations.

The pilot project at Mulshi reservoir marks Tata Power’s initial deployment of Ocean Sun’s membrane technology, with the company and SBI Securities monitoring its performance closely. The stock’s reaction on October 8 highlights market sensitivity to new ventures amid broader sector challenges.
