Truecaller has introduced Scam Checker, a free web and Android service that enables users to verify suspicious phone numbers, links, and messages for potential fraud without needing to download an app or sign in. The service launched in India and is planned to expand to Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, according to medianama.com.

Users can paste suspicious phone numbers, links, or messages into Scam Checker, which uses data from Truecaller’s crowdsourced Scamfeed platform to identify scams. For links, the tool expands shortened URLs, follows redirects, and checks the final destination against Truecaller’s proprietary risk database and other fraud indicators. Messages are scanned for phone numbers and links, with related community reports displayed. While basic scam information is accessible without signing in, detailed phone number data requires logging into Truecaller’s existing service. Users must agree to the company’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to submit queries.

Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala told TechCrunch that Scam Checker addresses how users encounter and investigate scams across multiple platforms, noting that people often need scam information while using other apps or websites. The launch expands Truecaller’s fraud detection beyond caller ID, aiming to provide broader protection. The company plans to add features like screenshot uploads and expand the types of scams detected, enhancing its fraud prevention capabilities in a competitive market where digital fraud is increasing.

Scam Checker’s initial rollout in India marks Truecaller’s strategic move to extend scam intelligence beyond its core caller ID service. The company’s next steps include regional expansions and feature enhancements, with the service already live and accessible to users seeking to verify suspicious communications without app installation.
