India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded its highest monthly transaction volume in August 2026, processing 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore, according to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This marked a 3.6% increase in transaction volume compared to July's 23.66 billion transactions, while transaction value slightly declined by 0.2% from Rs 29.88 lakh crore.

The average daily transactions on UPI rose to 791 million in August from 763 million in July, with daily transaction value remaining relatively stable at Rs 96,205 crore compared to Rs 96,383 crore in July. The average ticket size per transaction decreased to approximately Rs 1,217 from Rs 1,263, reflecting faster growth in transaction volume than in value. The number of live member banks on UPI also increased steadily, reaching 752 in August from 713 in April, indicating expanding participation from smaller and regional lenders.

UPI's growth in transaction volume and steady onboarding of banks underscores its expanding role in India's digital payments landscape. Compared to August 2025, transaction volume rose 22% and transaction value increased 20%, highlighting sustained adoption. The increase in smaller transactions suggests growing use for everyday payments. The steady addition of 39 banks over five months aligns with the platform's broader reach beyond major players like PhonePe and Google Pay, supporting financial inclusion efforts.

The National Payments Corporation of India’s data shows that UPI’s average daily transactions crossed 790 million in August 2026, setting a new monthly record for the digital payments system.
