Urban India had 666.09 million internet subscribers at the end of June 2026, while rural India accounted for 448.08 million subscribers, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) quarterly performance report. The urban subscriber base grew by 14.16 million from March, and the rural base increased by 7.21 million during the same period.
The data showed that the urban internet subscriber base was 218.01 million larger than the rural base in June 2026, up from a difference of 211.06 million in March. TRAI’s quarterly counts include Bharti Airtel’s machine-to-machine SIMs starting from the quarter ending March 2026, which partly explains the rise between December 2025 and March 2026 as a reclassification rather than solely new subscribers.
Internet subscriptions per 100 people stood at 129.03 in urban India in June, up from 126.8 in March, while rural India recorded 49.07 subscriptions per 100 people, up from 48.31. This left a gap of 79.96 subscriptions per 100 people between urban and rural areas. These figures represent subscriptions per 100 people, not the percentage of residents online or the number of distinct individuals with internet access.
The latest TRAI report highlights the continuing growth in internet penetration across India, with the next quarterly update expected after the end of September 2026, which will provide further insights into subscriber trends across urban and rural regions.
