Argentina has introduced a citizenship-by-investment programme, set to take effect in the fourth quarter, offering foreign nationals two investment options to obtain citizenship. The scheme requires either a non-refundable payment of $350,000 (₹3.37 crore) or the purchase of an $800,000 (₹7.71 crore) government bond, according to Argentina’s Economy Ministry, as reported by livemint.com.
The first investment route involves a direct payment to Argentina’s national treasury, with additional fees for family members: $100,000 (₹96.33 lakh) for a spouse and $25,000 (₹24.08 lakh) for each child under 18. A family of four would therefore need to invest $500,000 (₹4.82 crore). The second option requires purchasing a specially issued government bond worth $800,000. The funds raised will support Argentina’s fiscal and financial stability, the ministry said.
Argentina becomes the first South American country to offer citizenship through such an investment programme, and by population and size, the largest globally to do so. The programme aims to attract foreign capital to strengthen the country’s economy. Applicants will undergo security checks before citizenship is granted, ensuring vetting beyond the financial investment.
The programme was unveiled in Paris and is expected to commence within the fourth quarter. The government stated that proceeds from the programme will be used to bolster Argentina’s fiscal and financial position, marking a significant policy move to attract foreign investment.
