The Indian government is considering establishing a ₹15,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore National Frontier AI & Compute Fund (NFAICF) to support frontier AI companies and expand the country’s compute infrastructure, according to inc42.com. The fund aims to provide long-term risk capital for AI startups and finance GPU clusters, specialised data centres, and other infrastructure needed for advanced AI model development.

The proposal is under consultation, with details on the fund’s final corpus, structure, governance, and government capital role still being decided. The government is exploring a 50:50 capital contribution model with private investors. Discussions took place at a closed-door meeting titled “Financing India’s Frontier AI & Compute Ecosystem” in Delhi, attended by industry leaders including Sarvam cofounder Vivek Raghavan and Peak XV Partners MD Rajan Anandan, as well as MeitY secretary S Krishnan and IndiaAI Mission officials.

The NFAICF could be structured as a SEBI-regulated Category I Alternative Investment Fund, enabling it to channel investments efficiently into AI infrastructure and companies. This initiative aligns with India’s broader push to strengthen its AI capabilities amid global competition. The fund’s focus on GPU clusters and specialised data centres addresses a critical bottleneck in AI research and deployment, potentially positioning India as a significant player in frontier AI development.

The government continues to seek input from venture capital firms, infrastructure providers, and other stakeholders to refine the fund’s design and role in attracting private capital. The next steps involve finalising the governance framework and investment mechanisms, with the fund’s launch timeline yet to be announced.
