The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced it will initiate stakeholder discussions to draft a separate law for artificial intelligence regulation, Secretary S. Krishnan said at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s GCC Business Summit in New Delhi on July 9, 2026. This marks a shift from the Ministry’s earlier position in December 2025, when it had ruled out a dedicated AI law.
Krishnan explained that the Ministry is engaging with various industry groups to understand their perspectives on AI regulation. He noted that about 762 suggestions were received from different ministries regarding AI adoption and application needs. MeitY is now collaborating with these ministries to determine the next steps in the legislative process, reflecting the evolving landscape of AI compared to the IT Act of 2000.
The move to consider a separate AI law underscores the growing recognition that existing legislation does not adequately address the unique challenges posed by AI technologies. The IT Act was enacted over two decades ago, before the rapid advancements in AI. This initiative aligns with global trends where governments are exploring tailored regulatory frameworks to manage AI’s impact on society and industry.
The Ministry’s engagement with stakeholders and other ministries is ongoing, with the aim to draft a comprehensive AI regulation law. Secretary S. Krishnan’s remarks at the July 9 summit provide the latest official update on India’s regulatory approach to AI, signaling a significant policy development in the country’s technology governance.
