BorderPlus, founded in 2025 by upGrad cofounder Mayank Kumar and Ayush Mathur, is developing a talent mobility platform that trains Indian workers and places them in overseas blue-collar jobs. The startup aims to address labor shortages in developed countries like Germany and Japan by tapping into India’s surplus workforce, focusing initially on sectors such as nursing where demand is acute, according to inc42.com.
Mayank Kumar identified a gap in the blue-collar ecosystem during his time at upGrad, noting that local workers were less willing to pay for training and that the sector was underrepresented. After visiting nursing homes in Germany and witnessing the shortage firsthand, Kumar partnered with Mathur to create BorderPlus. The platform offers end-to-end services, including training, job matching, and managing the relocation process for workers moving abroad.
The demographic shifts in developed economies, with fertility rates below replacement levels, have created a growing demand for overseas workers to support aging populations. BorderPlus’s approach of vertically integrating training and placement aims to streamline the process and reduce friction for both workers and employers. This model could serve as a blueprint for addressing global labor shortages by leveraging India’s talent surplus.
BorderPlus was incorporated in 2025 and is currently building its platform to connect Indian workers with international employers, starting with sectors like nursing in Germany and Japan, inc42.com reports.
