Rafael Nadal, the retired tennis star with a $220 million net worth, has transitioned into the hospitality industry by opening a chain of hotels. Since ending his tennis career in November 2024, Nadal has launched four Zel Hotels, including a new adults-only beachfront property in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. The hotel brand, founded in 2022, is a partnership with Meliá Hotels International, marking Nadal’s move from sports to business.
Nadal explained that his extensive experience living in hotels during his 23-year tennis career inspired him to create his own hospitality brand. He said, “I am not the kind of guy that likes to wake up in the morning and don’t know what to do,” emphasizing his desire to stay active and productive. Nadal also part-sold his coaching business for $107 million, further diversifying his post-tennis ventures. His goal is to build a legacy beyond the tennis court by focusing on his hotel empire and family life.
The launch of Zel Hotels comes at a time when many athletes are seeking business opportunities after retirement. Nadal’s partnership with Meliá Hotels International leverages his personal experience and brand recognition in the hospitality sector. The hotel chain’s growth reflects a trend of sports stars entering entrepreneurship, with Nadal’s approach combining his lifestyle insights and business acumen to appeal to travelers seeking premium experiences.
Zel Hotels opened its first property, ZEL Mallorca, in 2023, and Nadal has since expanded the brand to four locations. The new Fuerteventura hotel is the latest addition, targeting adults-only guests on a beachfront site. Nadal’s transition from tennis to hospitality highlights his commitment to maintaining an active professional life, with the hotel chain serving as a concrete example of his post-retirement ambitions.
