SpaceX alumni raise $100M for autonomous freight trains

Parallel Systems, a startup founded by SpaceX alumni, has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round led by AVP to develop autonomous freight trains.

Parallel Systems, a startup founded by SpaceX alumni, has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round led by AVP to develop autonomous freight trains. The company’s rail vehicle, called Panther, can transport several tons of freight up to 500 miles without an operator. The funding aims to scale production and accelerate the commercial rollout of the third-generation Panther vehicle, announced this week.

The railroad industry has seen limited innovation recently, with longer trains being the main advancement. Parallel Systems seeks to disrupt this by enabling railroads to compete on shorter routes under 500 miles, a segment largely lost to trucking companies. CEO Matt Soule said their technology helps railroads recapture market share while benefiting the public by reducing traffic congestion and pollution, as the battery-powered Panther runs on existing rail infrastructure.

The $1 trillion surface freight market has shifted as diesel prices hit record highs, causing at least 16 trucking companies to go bankrupt recently. Parallel’s autonomous rail vehicles offer a sustainable alternative for short-haul freight, potentially reversing the trend of railroads abandoning these routes. The company’s approach aligns with broader efforts to decarbonize freight transport and improve efficiency in logistics.

Parallel Systems plans to use the $100 million capital to expand manufacturing capabilities and deploy its Panther vehicles commercially. The Series C round included investors such as Hillspire, Agility Global, Cobalt Capital, and An, underscoring strong investor confidence in the startup’s vision and technology.
