Type One Energy, a Knoxville-based startup founded in 2019, announced it has raised $200 million in Series B funding to develop a 400-megawatt commercial fusion power plant by 2034, according to TechCrunch. The funding positions the company among the top-funded fusion startups, aiming to advance fusion energy with a more cost-effective approach.

The startup’s CEO, Christofer Mowry, explained that the new capital will cover about half the cost of the planned power plant. Type One’s strategy involves designing the plant and its components internally while outsourcing manufacturing to a specialized network of suppliers. This contrasts with many fusion companies that build most parts in-house, allowing Type One to reduce capital expenditure significantly.

Fusion energy development requires expertise in plasma physics, materials science, and advanced computation, making it a capital-intensive field. Type One’s model of leveraging external suppliers rather than vertical integration aims to lower costs compared to competitors. Mowry highlighted that this approach avoids heavy investment in physical manufacturing infrastructure, which is a major expense for other fusion startups.

Type One Energy’s goal is to bring its first fusion power plant online by 2034, potentially achieving commercialization with less capital than many rivals. The company’s funding announcement on October 6 marks a key milestone in its development timeline, with further financing rounds expected to complete the project’s budget.
