Groww builds in-house AI stack to cut rising compute costs

Groww, the investment platform owned by Billionbrains Garage Ventures, is developing its own in-house AI stack to reduce compute costs, co-founder and CEO Lalit Keshre said during the Q2 FY27 earnings call. The move comes as the company’s compute expenses rose 24% to Rs 206 crore in Q2 FY27 from Rs 166 crore in Q1 FY27 amid increased AI usage across its services, according to medianama.com.

Keshre explained that relying on third-party commercial AI models would have resulted in much higher per-token costs. To address this, Groww is building its own AI infrastructure. Over recent months, the company has launched multiple AI products, including GR-1, an AI investing assistant unveiled at the Groww Next 2026 event. GR-1 analyzes market data and news sentiment to provide personalized insights but requires user approval for trade execution. Co-founder and CFO Ishan Bansal detailed that the rise in cost to serve is linked to transaction and technology expenses, while cost to grow, which includes brand building and marketing, declined 29% quarter-on-quarter to Rs 105 crore.

The development reflects a broader trend among fintech firms to internalize AI capabilities to manage escalating compute costs driven by increased AI adoption. Groww’s approach aims to balance innovation in AI-powered investment tools with cost efficiency. Comparable companies in the sector have also faced rising technology expenses as they integrate AI into their platforms, making Groww’s strategy a notable example of managing operational costs while expanding AI features.

Groww’s Q2 FY27 financial disclosures show a clear increase in technology-related expenses, with cost to serve rising to Rs 206 crore. The company’s continued rollout of AI products like GR-1 signals sustained investment in AI, even as it seeks to optimize costs through its in-house AI stack.
