Billionaire philanthropist Lauren Sánchez Bezos has committed $34 million in grants to advance sustainable materials in the fashion and textile industry, the Bezos Earth Fund announced in late April. The funding is divided among four research projects at Columbia University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, Clemson University, and the Cotton Foundation, aiming to develop eco-friendly textile fibers and restore cotton seedbanks, according to fortune.com.

UC Berkeley received $10 million to develop a biodegradable fiber inspired by spider silk without using silkworms, spiders, or plastic. Clemson University was awarded $11 million to genetically engineer cotton with built-in color and performance. The Cotton Foundation received $1.5 million to restore a non-GMO cotton seedbank. Sánchez Bezos, vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, emphasized the importance of these innovations for the planet and the future of fashion.
The Bezos Earth Fund’s initiative targets the fashion industry’s material and manufacturing processes, which account for roughly 80% of its environmental footprint, including emissions, water use, pollution, and landfill waste. The fund is part of a broader $10 billion climate pledge by Jeff Bezos, with approximately $7 billion remaining to be disbursed by 2030. This funding round highlights a growing focus on sustainable textile innovation, positioning these projects alongside other efforts to reduce environmental harm in fashion production.
