The Indian Army launched 'Bharat Rice' on Monday, a superior-quality rice initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of rations supplied to defence personnel, especially in remote areas. The rice will be milled according to defence specifications and distributed through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) during the financial year 2026-27, according to livemint.com.
The initiative, led by the Directorate General of Supplies and Transport, was developed based on continuous feedback from troops. The rice will undergo mandatory quality-control checks to ensure it is free from foreign matter, impurities, and has minimal broken, damaged, or discoloured grains. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi attended the launch, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving soldier welfare, livemint.com reported.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Indian Army and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to utilize FCI’s infrastructure during operational contingencies. This arrangement will enable direct delivery of Bharat Rice to Army Supply Depots, including those in remote regions such as Ladakh and the North East, eliminating the need for troops to collect supplies from local FCI facilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the initiative as a bond of trust connecting farmers and soldiers, according to livemint.com.
Bharat Rice is set to reach Army supply depots across remote locations in the financial year 2026-27, ensuring improved ration quality for troops stationed in challenging environments, as detailed by the Defence Ministry and reported by livemint.com.
