Nitin Gadkari launches OneTag bank portability for FASTag at Global Fintech Fest

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched OneTag, a bank-portability feature for the existing NETC FASTag system, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched OneTag, a bank-portability feature for the existing NETC FASTag system, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The feature allows users to retain their FASTag while switching to their preferred bank, similar to mobile number portability. Gadkari also announced a timeline for barrier-free tolling nationwide, aiming to streamline toll payments across India, according to medianama.com.

The OneTag feature was introduced during Gadkari’s session titled “India’s Intelligent Highway: Tolling and the Agentic Future of Mobility Finance” at the Global Fintech Fest. Despite expectations, the session did not cover AI-driven or autonomous agentic payments, which were initially part of the agenda. The launch focused on improving user convenience by enabling FASTag portability between banks, enhancing the existing National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system’s flexibility.

This development addresses a key challenge in the tolling ecosystem by allowing customers to switch banks without changing their FASTag, thereby reducing friction in toll payments. The move aligns with broader efforts to digitize and unify payment systems in India’s transport infrastructure. The feature is expected to complement ongoing initiatives like the Unified Agent Protocol by NPCI, which aims to further integrate payment technologies, though NPCI has not yet launched this protocol.

The Global Fintech Fest 2026 served as the platform for this announcement, marking a step toward seamless tolling and mobility finance in India. The government’s timeline for barrier-free tolling aims to enhance efficiency and user experience across the country’s highways, with the OneTag feature as a foundational component.
