Amsterdam-based robotics startup Monumental has raised $32 million in a Series B funding round led by Khosla Ventures, the company announced today. Founded in 2021 by Salar al Khafaji and Sebastiaan Visser, Monumental develops robots and software to automate construction of infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. Existing investors Plural and Hummingbird also participated in the round, which follows a $25 million raise in 2024, according to sifted.eu.
Monumental’s founders previously co-founded Silk, a startup acquired by Palantir in 2016. The company applies Palantir’s forward-deployed engineering model to build physical infrastructure using robotics. The new funding will be used to expand their team of hardware and software engineers, increase the number of robots deployed across Europe, and broaden the range of construction tasks their robots can perform. Monumental also plans to enter the US market with 100 robots to address a monthly shortfall of 200,000 to 400,000 construction workers.
The US construction sector has experienced a historic decline in productivity since the 1960s, while construction costs have surged and industry practices have remained largely unchanged. Monumental’s approach aims to close this labor gap by automating construction processes, potentially increasing efficiency and reducing costs. The company’s model builds on its founders’ experience with Palantir and reflects growing investor interest in robotics solutions for traditional industries.
Monumental’s $32 million Series B round marks a step toward scaling its operations internationally. The company plans to deploy 100 robots in the US market to help alleviate labor shortages and improve construction productivity. This expansion follows their previous $25 million raise in 2024 and signals growing momentum for robotics in infrastructure development, according to sifted.eu.
