Uber has expanded its bike taxi service, Uber Bike, to 100 additional cities across India, increasing its presence to over 220 cities in total. The service now operates in 18 states and one union territory, including locations such as Jammu, Tirunelveli, Silchar, and Jamnagar. The company’s move follows a ₹2,921 crore equity infusion into its India business earlier this year, which came amid intensified competition in the bike taxi segment. Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari welcomed the expansion and encouraged states to adopt the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, to support bike taxis and other mobility services. The guidelines aim to facilitate affordable first- and last-mile connectivity and boost livelihood opportunities, inc42.com reported.
Bike taxis have been a contentious issue in India, with some states like Goa and Uttar Pradesh officially permitting the service, while others such as Maharashtra and Karnataka have yet to adopt it. Uber’s main competitor in this segment, Rapido, currently holds nearly 60% market share and operates in around 400 cities. Uber’s expansion reflects its strategy to deepen reach in smaller towns and compete more aggressively in the two-wheeler mobility market, per inc42.com.
