Eyewear startup Lenskart has started piloting AI-enabled eye testing at select stores, founder and CEO Peyush Bansal announced during the company’s Q1 FY27 earnings call. The AI self-eye test is built on one of India’s largest eye test data sets. Lenskart’s remote eye testing services have expanded to 786 stores and cover over 1,200 pincodes for home tests, according to the call, raising questions about user privacy and data protection.
Lenskart’s AI-enabled remote eye tests use technology from Tango Eye, a computer vision startup acquired in 2023, which monitors tests through CCTV cameras. The company collects and stores facial recognition data from millions of users, with 100,000 face scans captured daily in Q3 FY26. Since January, customers have been required to complete facial scans when visiting stores or using the app. Bansal confirmed that this biometric data is fed into AI models to improve lens design and customer fitting accuracy.
The move to integrate AI into eye testing and biometric data collection places Lenskart among the leading eyewear companies leveraging AI in India. The company claims its remote eye test results are more consistent than traditional physical tests. However, the extensive use of facial recognition and biometric data has sparked privacy concerns, as users’ sensitive information is stored and used to train proprietary AI models. This development highlights ongoing debates over data security in AI-driven healthcare services.
Lenskart’s Q1 FY27 earnings call revealed the company’s continued investment in AI technologies, with remote eye testing now live across 786 stores and home tests available in over 1,200 pincodes. The company’s facial scan database, capturing 100,000 scans daily as of Q3 FY26, remains a key asset for its AI model training, underscoring the scale of biometric data involved.
